Changes coming to recycling collection at Regional District transfer stations

Recycling collection services at all Regional District transfer stations are changing.

The contractor who currently provides the paper and packaging recycling drop off bins and hauling services is unable to continue the service after May 31. This means there will be a service interruption for paper and packaging recycling drop off at Regional District transfer stations beginning May 31.

The Regional District is exploring other service options available through Recycle BC, the organization responsible for residential packaging and paper product recycling in BC.

Recycle BC has provided an offer to the Regional District to establish principal collection depots at the Mackenzie Select Waste Landfill and Regional Transfer Station, Quinn Street Regional Recycling Depot and Valemount Regional Transfer Station. A timeline is being developed to determine when these depots would be operational. It is anticipated to be sometime this fall.

The Regional District is working with Recycle BC to minimize the disruption and determine what other sites satisfy Recycle BC’s criteria for principal and satellite collection depots, but these sites may not be identified and operational until closer to the end of the year.

Once new collection depots are operational, the items accepted for recycling will expand to include:

  • paper and paper packaging
  • cardboard
  • cartons and paper cups
  • containers (plastic, aluminum, and metal)
  • glass
  • flexible plastics
  • foam packaging

Paper and packaging recycling drop off collection will continue to be available at the Prince George Recycling Centre off Vance Road and the Hart Return-It Centre on the Hart Highway.

The residential curbside collection program offered in the City of Prince George is not impacted by this change so Prince George residents can continue to utilize this recycling collection service.

Metal, compost, appliances, batteries, and oil will still be accepted at existing locations.

Cardboard compaction will still be available at the Mackenzie, McBride and Valemount transfer station locations.
