The Regional District of Fraser-Fort George is partnering with Forsite Consultants Ltd. to develop a Community Wildfire Resiliency Plan for each electoral area. As a part of this plan, forest professionals will assess provincial crown land within the wildland-urban interface to collect forest stand data like tree composition and density, and the levels of woody fuels available to burn in wildfires.
Forsite staff will not be assessing private lands but will be using public roads to access and observe the provincial crown land included in this project. Watch for survey crews making frequent stops across the Regional District between August 11 and 25, 2024. They will be driving white Toyota Tacomas with yellow FRSTE identification signs on the front bumpers.
The forestry data collected will provide insight into the current state of forests and help make decisions to increase wildfire resiliency. The data may be used to:
- inform the development of Community Wildfire Resiliency Plans and Official Community Plans
- determine the hazard rating of forested areas adjacent to private property and infrastructure
- identify potential fuel management strategies for reducing the overall hazard within foreststands
- measure the effectiveness of fuel management strategies over time
