As part of ongoing rotating job action, CUPE 1699 withdrew its services from Foothills Boulevard Regional Landfill for Friday October 24. The Regional District of Fraser-Fort George believes CUPE 1699 is in violation of an Essential Services Order and is pursuing the issue with the BC Labour Relations Board

In September, the BC Labour Relations Board's Essential Services Order declared Foothills Boulevard Regional Landfill to be an essential service and required it to be operated five days a week for eight hours a day. Under this order, the Regional District is responsible for providing the days of operation to CUPE 1699 and CUPE 1699 are responsible for providing the required staff. The Essential Services Order operating schedule the Regional District has supplied to CUPE 1699 identifies that the landfill will be open Tuesday to Saturday from 9 am to 5 pm.

Moving to Essential Services Order schedule for Foothills Boulevard Regional Landfill and Vanway Regional Transfer Station

The Regional District is working hard to keep facilities open for residents during CUPE 1699's job action and is disappointed CUPE 1699 is not respecting the community's needs. Going forward, the Regional District wants to provide residents with consistent services at Foothills Boulevard Regional Landfill. Starting Saturday October 25, the landfill will move from its regular operating schedule to the Essential Services Order schedule of Tuesday to Saturday 9 am to 5 pm.

With the landfill's Essential Service Order schedule in place, the hours at Vanway Regional Transfer Station also need to be adjusted to Tuesday to Saturday 9 am to 5 pm. Vanway Regional Transfer Station can only operate on days when Foothills Boulevard Regional Landfill is open as waste collected at the transfer station is hauled to the landfill multiple times per day.
