Section 5: Land use designations, objectives and policies
The official community plan describes land use designations that identify how lands can be used. Each land use designation has a section with objectives, a list of uses supported in the designation, and other policies to inform land use decisions. Parcel designations are displayed on land use maps in Schedule B - Land use maps [PDF/17.5MB].

Agriculture
Agriculture (AG)
to preserve agricultural land and enable and support its use for farming and other uses that are compatible with agriculture
designation generally follows the boundaries of the Agricultural Land Reserve
Residential
Lakeshore settlement (LS)
to recognize the existing residential development around Ness Lake, Nukko Lake, Chief Lake and other large lakes in the plan area and prioritize the long-term preservation of lake and lakeshore ecosystems
Rural residential (RR)
to maintain the integrity of existing residential areas and support limited development opportunities that enhance community living
Residential subdivision (RS)
to identify areas that may be suitable for further residential subdivision development because they are near existing neighbourhoods and not within the Agricultural Land Reserve
Multi-unit residential (MU)
to allow the consideration of site-specific proposals for higher-density residential development through the plan amendments
Commercial
Commercial (C)
to identify areas of existing and potential commercial business, retail, and service uses intended to serve the local area or provide tourism opportunities
Industrial
Light industrial (LI)
to identify areas of existing and proposed light industrial uses intended to serve the local area
Heavy industrial (HI)
to identify areas for heavy industrial development
Civic institutional and public utility
Civic institutional (CI)
to provide for a range of government, public, and community related services
Parks and recreation
Parks and recreation (PR)
to support a range of park spaces and recreational opportunities
Natural resource
Natural resources (NR)
to encompass the majority of lands within the plan area that are located outside of settlement areas or the Agricultural Land Reserve
prioritizes land uses that depend on, or are compatible with, the natural landscape and resource base, while maintaining the area's rural character and ecological integrity
