FireSmart

FireSmart BC is the provincial program to help reduce BC's wildfire risk and it's the go-to resource for individuals, neighborhoods and communities looking to protect themselves and their properties.

  • FireSmart is based on scientific research that shows that doing simple FireSmart tasks like mowing your lawn, cleaning your gutters and pruning your trees can make your property more resilient to wildfire.
  • Wildfires need fuel—like trees, grass or other vegetation—to ignite and spread. Embers can easily spark fires by landing on flammable materials around your home and cause significant damage or even total structure loss. Removing vegetation and combustible debris from your property and preventing ember buildup can significantly reduce the risk of your home igniting.
  • The FireSmart BC website has many helpful resources, like the FireSmart BC Begins At Home Guide and the interactive FireSmart Landscaping Hub that lists fire-resistant plants and provides tips on creating a FireSmart landscape.
