Accessory Building Permits

Accessory buildings in the ALR need approval from the ALC before you apply for a building permit

Before applying, you should contact Development Services to check if your property zoning allows an accessory building. Visit the Zoning page

Required documents

The following documents are required before you can apply for a permit:

Building Permit application form
Plumbing Permit application form
site plan

two copies of building plans to scale
- preferred scale of 1/4" per ft, printed on 11” by 17” or larger

- construction details
Appointment of Agent form if you are using a contractor
title search
- within the last three months
Record of Sewage registered with Northern Health
- visit Engineers and Geoscientists BC or Applied Science Technologists & Technicians of British Columbia to find a Registered Onsite Wastewater Practitioner
engineering schedules and/or reports (if applicable)
truss layout and details if applicable
$100 application processing fee
- credit card authorization form

accessory buildings with concrete slab on grade larger than 592 ft² (55 m²)
stud walls over 12 ft (3.658 m) high
preserved wood foundations
structures with foundations of solid timber, pressure treated timber and poles, and dimensional lumber in the ground
roof and floor truss systems
roof spans over 40 ft (12.2 m)
structural beams (glue-lam, parallam, LVL)
buildings over 3 storeys high
buildings over 6,460 ft² (600 m²)
assembly occupancies (Group A, BC Building Code)
care, treatment and detention occupancies (Group B, BC Building Code)
high hazard occupancies (Group F, Division 1, BC Building Code)
log and timber structures (including foundations)
framing members for wood-frame construction spaced more than 2 ft (600 mm) on centre
live load over 2.4 KPA (50 lbs psf) for floor framing, subflooring and fastening
